Fast Food Nutrition Compared: Burgers, Fries and Chicken

Since 2018, US chains with 20 or more locations must show calories on menus, and full nutrition information must be available on request. That makes comparing easier than ever.

The figures below are approximate values from each chain's published US nutrition information. Recipes, sizes and countries differ, so always check the chain's own site for current numbers.

Easy swaps

Biggest win

Drink water or unsweetened tea

Sugary drinks are often the easiest calories to cut without changing the food.

Portions

Go small on fries

A small portion gives the same taste with roughly half the calories of a large.

Chicken

Grilled over crispy

Grilled chicken usually has far less fat than battered and fried.

Hidden extras

Hold the extra sauce

Mayonnaise-based sauces and extra cheese add calories and saturated fat.

Fibre

Add vegetables

Side salads, fruit cups or extra lettuce and tomato help balance the meal.
